Learning Support

Students have access to a range of support services from the Junior School’s learning support team.

Students who require specialised instruction, either remedially or for enrichment, in certain areas of the curriculum such as literacy, numeracy and critical thinking, benefit from these services.

Support and enrichment is offered in small groups. Explanation, direction and structure is given, so that learning is a scaffolded process which takes place in a safe environment.

Enrichment groups focus on learning and applying creative and critical thinking strategies that are applied across all curriculum areas. Students are included in the groups based on prior knowledge of the student, standardised assessments, previous reports and consultation with the class teacher. This creates a thorough understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the individual.

The groups are fluid and students may change each semester or at the end of term if necessary, as their learning improves or needs further support. Our groups are regularly assessed to address needs.

Support and enrichment is also offered in the classroom working alongside the classroom teacher. The Learning Support Team work collaboratively with class teachers to program units of work that are differentiated for a range of abilities. The school also employs teachers aides to support student learning.

Students with specific disabilities may require an Individual Plan to access the curriculum. The Learning Support team work collaboratively with parents and teachers to determine whether the disability affects the student’s ability to participate in learning experiences and what adjustments are necessary. Adjustments are made to ensure participation is on the same basis as a student without a disability. Adjustments are reviewed and modifications are made as necessary. (Disability Standards for Education 2005)

Learning Support teachers encourage students to take personal responsibility to be active learners. Positive reinforcement combined with self-motivation is the key to learning. Students feel motivated, encouraged and supported by our specialist teachers, knowing that a new concept will be reinforced or practically demonstrated to deepen understanding, so that they can become confident learners.

Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy services are also available onsite by appointment.
